Giveaway - Better Date Than Never (Books 1-6) by Susan Hatler

The Better Date Than Never box set from USA Today Bestseller Susan Hatler includes six contemporary romance novellas from the bestselling series, Better Date Than Never. Dating is so much easier when you have good friends to lean on. . . .

(Love at First Date, Book #1)
Ellen may not believe in storybook love, but it’s about to rewrite her life. . . .

Excerpt from Love at First Date (Better Date than Never, Book #1)

Holding Rachel’s bright yellow dishtowel under Chester’s saliva-dripping mouth, I panicked at the morphed sounds he was making. “Hang in there, dude.”

I shifted him in my arms then slammed on the metal bell some more. “Does anyone work here?”

“Can I help?” A male voice came from behind me.

“Yes, this dog got into my purse and—” I paused mid-sentence as my gaze met dark gray eyes that sent a bolt of adrenaline through me. My heart flipped in my chest. Not an appropriate reaction when Rach’s dog could be dying. “I-I think he ate something toxic. Maybe my lip-gloss? Are you the vet? Can you give him that charcoal stuff to make him barf it up?”

He studied Chester’s half-open mouth. “Try setting him down. I’ll take a look.”

“Thanks.” I knelt, still holding the towel under his mouth—because, ew, slobber all over the place.

The vet dropped to his knees next to Chester and pried his little jaw open.

Hech! Hech!

As he examined the dog’s throat, I couldn’t help checking him out. There was something going on behind those dark eyes that had me dying to learn everything about him. Where he was from, what made him tick, what he looked for in a girl . . .

My pulse slammed into overdrive.

Weird that the vet was wearing sweats, though. Maybe he’d finished with his last patient and was going for a run? Definitely looked like a guy who worked out regularly. Yeah, that’s what I should be thinking about while my friend’s dog was gagging for his life. What was wrong with me? Focus, Ellen. “Can you save him?”

(Truth or Date, Book #2)
Truth or Dare is all fun and games until a spontaneous dare has Gina falling for the office playboy.

(My Last Blind Date, Book #3)
Should Rachel risk another dating disaster by trying yet again for love?

(Save the Date, Book #4)
Kristen swears off men, but temptation swoops in when her sexy friend Ethan starts flirting with her.

(A Twist of Date, Book #5)
Will Melanie have to follow her best friend’s narrow dating rules in order to find lasting love?

(License to Date, Book #6)
Kaitlin agrees to five dates in five days only to fall for the mysterious bartender who’s there to witness them all.

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000035_00025]

Banal. Lifeless and Colorless.

These are the words that describe my life. I’ve made the right choices, done all the right things. I’m strong, intelligent and highly successful. I’ve lived scrupulously, loved greatly, and shared my blessings equitably. But life hasn’t been fair with me. Now I’m drowning in the middle of the ocean, desperately searching for the shore, surrendering to the fact that I will never be happy. Then he came along. Life is unpredictable. You can play it safe and resist change for fear of the unknown. Or you can close your eyes and take the leap with the knowledge that your life will change forever. Which one will I choose?

My name is Jade Richmond and this is my story.

My mom is always there for me,
Her support makes me be the best I can be
She's the one who knows me best.
She comforts me when I'm depressed
She listens to what I have to say
She makes my problems fade away
And though we have our share of fights
In the end she makes everything all right
There are also times we don't always agree
But that's okay because I know she will always love me
Her faith is so strong, her love for me so great
I'd go crazy without her, my mother is my soul mate!
Mother's Day 2004

Today marks the third anniversary of the day I died. The setting sun skates across the water surrounded by the orange sky streaked with alternating layers of blue and white and yellow. The water is still and calm with only tiny rolls of waves washing upon the shore. If I looked far enough, I can see her standing at the end of the universe. I can feel her presence close by. I can hear her sweet singing voice next to me. How many times have I imagined what it would be like if I saw her again? Soon, now.

I walk sideways along the shore where the water meets the sand, farther and farther from any sign of life. Away from judgment, from condemnation. From things that remind me of the mess I've made. My hands are full, my steps are heavy. But my heart…it's open. It's free. I've done what I could to apologize for all the hurt I've caused them. I've said the words to tell him just how much I love him. Without me, I know they will all be forced to move on.

I stop in the middle of nowhere, ready to finish what I came here to do. In my left hand is one single flower. A calla lily. Simple and understated, but meaningful. In my right hand is a little box with breathing holes and a chirping sound emanating from it.

Let me sit down for a while, I say to myself. Collect my thoughts. Remember why I'm here. I sit for what feels like hours, but in the scheme of things, I know that it's only for a minute. Slowly, I open the box with the bird in it. A swallow so tiny but whose wings are strong and powerful, cowering along the edge of the box, shaking and afraid. I take a deep breath and touch its head with my little finger. Is that what a feather feels like? I'm shaking. I'm sick. I don't think I can do it. How can something so small scare me so much? How can something as small, as insignificant as a bird, cause me to change my path every time I come across it? Another deep breath as I lift it gently, my fingers lightly enclosing it before I place it on the palm of my hand. Its scraggy little feet feel like pin pricks on my skin.

There. That wasn't so bad now, was it?

I laugh out loud as I raise my arm up in the air, tossing the bird up high, watching it fly far away from me. Ha! Take that!

The tide creeps up. The tiny box washes away as I stand up to complete my journey.

The water is dark. My feet feel cold. With the flower clasped in my hand, I move forward. Slowly, surely. I step upon the sand until I can no longer see my feet.

I flinch and jump up in surprise. Something rubs against my legs. Seaweed wraps around my toes. I close my eyes and keep moving. My last fear. Fear of the bottomless unknown that is part of every life. This will be over soon.

Beyond my comfort zone and into the ocean I go. Deeper and deeper until the tide pushes me forward and my feet can no longer anchor themselves on the sand.

I close my eyes and pray. I pray for forgiveness, but most of all I pray for those who will be left behind.
As the tide carries me further away, I delight in the numbness that the cold brings to my skin. The muffled sound of the water in my ear. The overwhelming, heartfelt feeling of closure.

Floating, floating, floating away filled with so much peace.

Review - Between Henry & Clinton by Francine Richetti

Life has a way of happening
without notifying you first.

Teo is used to living a life that he inherited;
a life he thought he was responsible for;
a life that was brought about by
circumstances out of his control;
a life he rarely, if ever, talks about.

Teo knows what it feels like to love.
He knows what it means to be depended on.
He knows how to sacrifice.

What he doesn't know, is how to trust,
how to let his guard down, or
how to let himself feel again.

Until, one night, on a stoop in Brooklyn, between Henry and Clinton.

My Two Cents

5 Fabulous Emotional Stars!

A NYC setting, an English teacher and a musician. What more could I possibly ask for in a book!

Being a proud New Yorker (said with that infamous NY accent), I’m drawn to stories that take place in my hometown where I can easily envision the tree-lined streets, houses, and familiar locales along with the city’s bustling movement. Throw in an English teacher (raises hand…undergraduate English major here) and musician (raises hand…always had a thing for guitar players here…oh wait, I married one!) and we have the makings of the PERFECT storyline for me!

A beautiful debut novel by this first time author, BH&C is a touching romance about a broken boy still dealing with the fallout from 9/11 and the girl who gets too close. Teo never lets anybody “in,” always keeping people at arms length. He was upfront from the start with Natalia that he wouldn’t allow her to get close. But there was a strong connection between them that neither could deny. Observing Teo and Natalia’s blossoming “friendship” from the sidelines left a swarm of butterflies fluttering inside me. I was shamelessly rooting for Nat to make her way into Teo’s heart and leave her permanent mark.

Every greeting, meeting, and coffee date left me “squeeing” for more. And then there was Cape Cod. Double, no, TRIPLE SQUEE! Their conversations can be described as nothing less than intelligent and thoughtful. I love how Teo would always pause, taking time to put his thoughts into ideal words before responding to Nat’s questions or statements. And their touches, their kisses, well…electric!

This book was about relationships. While the main storyline focused on Nat and Teo’s relationship, we are also treated to the heartwarming brother/sister relationship between Nat and Joe; the life-long friendship between Nat and Gitte; and the rather hilarious “friends of the opposite sex” relationship between Nat and Chris. Oh, that Chris (clears throat)!

And then there’s Georgette, Nat’s upstairs neighbor. I think I actually have one of those in my neighborhood (snickers). ;)

But Teo is the one who takes our breath away.
“Don't take the mundane for granted Nat. Mundane is comfortable, safe. With so much in this life that is out of our control, a little mundane is nice."
The past always has a way of haunting us. Teo is still hurting. As is Nat. And then there are the secrets. Secrets that are unintentionally discovered. A twisted, tangled knot of secrets that could so easily be untied if only. If only what, you might ask. Well, you’ll need to read the book to find those answers.

So, now I’ll be adding the subway token charm bracelet to my Alex & Ani collection. If you want to know why, read the book. Even if you don’t want to know why, read the book. Just. Go. Read. The. Book. You won’t be disappointed.

Lyla Summers hates men. Okay, maybe hate is a strong word … Lyla intensely dislikes men. Her father has let her down her whole life. Her brother betrayed her in the worst way possible. And her past relationship experiences with men have been less than great. Lyla is focussing all her energy into her band, Vintage, so when they receive an offer to sign with TMS Records, it seems that things are finally turning around for her. The last thing she wants is a man getting in the way.

Tom Carter loves women. Okay, love might be pushing it … Tom enjoys screwing lots of women. When tragedy befalls his best friend, Tom finds himself making a promise to the big man upstairs – he’ll change his ways, if he saves the woman his best friend loves. Tom’s prayer is answered. Now he has to change. Which means no sleeping around.

After Vintage’s manager breaks her leg skiing, Tom steps in as tour manager, and Lyla finds herself on tour with the man whore of rock. Putting one perpetually horny Tom and one sex resistant Lyla together, equals a recipe for disaster. Or so you’d think… But an unexpected friendship is formed. A closeness neither of them expected. Putting one chastity belt and one lamp that is in desperate need of rubbing, to the test. Will the sex storm that is Tom Carter, finally find himself tamed by the rock chick with a hardened heart, or will he go back to his womanizing ways…?

the mighty storm

Book 1 - The Mighty Storm

It's been twelve years since Tru Bennett last saw Jake Wethers, her former best friend and boy she once loved.

Jake Wethers, sexy, tattooed and deliciously bad lead singer, and brains behind The Mighty Storm, one of the biggest bands in the world, left Tru with a broken heart when he moved from England to America with his family when they were both fourteen. Sent to interview Jake for her music column by the magazine she works for, they are both unprepared for the sparks that fly the instant they reconnect. Only, there’s a complication to their instant feelings for one another—Will, Tru’s boyfriend of two years. Then Jake makes Tru a job offer she can't refuse—traveling the world with him and his band. But taking the job means leaving Will behind, and being on the road with the band means spending an inordinate amount of time with Jake.

Is Tru strong enough to resist the delectable bad boy who once held her heart so completely, or will she willingly risk it all for one night with the world's most notorious womanizer?

Read my 5 multi-O OMG! review of The Mighty Storm here.

wethering the storm

Book 2 - Wethering the Storm

Music journalist Tru Bennett has done the impossible: capture the heart of rock-star bad boy Jake Wethers. Now they’re busy planning a wedding and navigating their new life together in the US. Of course Tru misses London and her best friend, Simone, but living happily ever after with Jake in LA is going to be great…right? Wrong. Even the bright California sun can’t whitewash the dark side of celebrity coupledom. Greedy music execs, merciless paparazzi, and Jake’s wild past are lurking around every corner. Making matters worse, Jake announces he doesn’t want kids, which just may be a deal breaker. Tru loves Jake more than anything. But when a devastating crisis threatens to destroy everything they’ve fought for, the couple must face the hard truth: What if, this time, love is not enough?
