Aerie Daniels

There’s something deliciously perverse about staring through the clear glass. All of my senses engage as I wait in line—the fragrance that fills the air as the fire crackles beneath the foil wrapped treats wafts under my nose, the beauty in each and every small package as they line the shelves with tiny dots and colored sprinkles mesmerizes me, thesound made as the silver sheet is peeled back to reveal the magnificence it holds captivates me, and the anticipation of the taste makes my mouth water. Ummm… just thinking of the first bite into the moist brown exterior with its bittersweet Belgian
chocolate complimenting the flavor of the Madagascar bourbon vanilla that oozes from its inside has me trembling. The black and white cupcake—it’s simply perfection.

Amidst the skyscrapers in Los Angeles’ South Park neighborhood, Sprinkles is a gem tucked away for those of us who seek out a small piece of heaven. I don’t come here often, but when I do it’s for that one special treat. The menu describes it as, “Yin and Yang.” An ancient proverb that says, “Complementary opposites, such as light and dark, day and night, and masculine and feminine, seemingly may exist as contrary forces, but are actually interconnected.” Simply put, it says one gives rise to the other and it’s true—opposites attract. Without the vanilla inside, one could not possibly crave the chocolate outside—looking at the two parts united has me drooling.

“You know what they say about staring through the glass,” a deep husky voice says from behind me.

His words tingle my skin and my gaze snaps up. “Excuse me?” I stop short, in a daze, not even sure what he just said I was so lost in my thoughts.

He chuckles. “You know what they say about staring through the glass,” he repeats.

My eyes blink and come into focus on the upward tilt of his full lips. Then my eyes move to his smooth pale skin flecked with a light stubble, his nose seemingly sculpted even with a slight imperfection in its slope, large eyes with the most unusual gray color swirling from within, and chocolate brown colored hair framing his face in pieces—I’m not sure if he has just rolled out of bed or if product molds it just so. Either way, he is utterly beautiful.

“I’m sorry, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Just be careful so you don’t fall in like Alice.” He smiles, displaying his bright white teeth.

“Again, I’m sorry but I have no idea what you’re talking about.” I notice his eyes sweep over me and my heart starts pounding.

“Through the Looking Glass,” he responds in a dangerously husky voice.

This time when he speaks I catch an accent, ever so slight but extremely sexy. It reminds me of how Robert De Nero talks, just not as loud or fast. I continue to stare, unable to respond. I notice that his physique is long and lean. He’s dressed in worn jeans that fit him perfectly. His orange laced hiking boots scream I don’t conform. A pair of tortoiseshell sunglasses hang from the V of his gray sweater, which clings to his bodyperfectly. And an outdoor vest tops the outfit. It throws me off. It makes him look morelike an Abercrombie model than a James Dean type. It’s a navy blue down and quilted
one with a silver zipper. I don’t know why, but something about his outfit, about this
man, captivates me.

“Number 98,” calls the girl from behind the counter.

He steps closer. His warm breath whispers across my neck. “Through the Looking Glass is the sequel to Alice in Wonderland. When Alice gets too close to the glass, she falls in and starts on a crazy journey,” he tells me as his arm waves in the air with a green ticket on display. Stepping closer, his gaze cuts from mine to the glass case as he handshis number to the clerk whose wearing a cute brown apron with the word Sprinkles scripted across it.

“Can I have a dozen of the black and white cupcakes?” he asks.

Suddenly alarmed, my eyes dart to the case as I watch the single remaining row of beautifully crafted cupcakes diminish until there are none left. My irritation flares as I glance at my number—97. The beautiful stranger hands the clerk his credit card and waits to sign the slip.

“I was number 97, my number was before yours,” I say as he’s handed the bag that holds his treasure.

“Oh, I’m sorry. Here let me get the sales clerk’s attention so you don’t have to take
another number,” he says.

I want to stomp my feet. I want to scream. I don’t want her attention. I don’t want another number. I want the cupcakes that he stole from me.

“Miss,” he calls draping his perfectly fit body over the case. She looks his way andwith a charming grin he says, “Can you help this lovely lady? She missed her numberbeing called.”

“Of course, I’m so sorry. How can I help you?” the girl asks averting her eyes from the man who looks like he should be on the cover of GQ magazine, over to me.

He smiles at me with a face that belongs on a billboard. “Don’t fall in.”

I swear he’s goading me. But then he tips his chin and a sexy, smoldering grin passes over his lips and I’m not so sure anymore. He turns to look at me one more time before he exits, and excitement flushes over my face. I nod a slight cursory acknowledgement, then he disappears and disappointment washes over me—he’s gone. Crap. The cupcakes are also gone. Double crap. And now I’m left wondering if he saw me staring at that flavor? Did he distract me on purpose so he could purchase them first? Urrr…I’m so angry right now I consider walking out, but when the clerk asks me what I’d like I settle for the Vanilla Milk Chocolate cakes—they are the mirror reflection of the black and whites, with vanilla cake and chocolate frosting, but they are not nearly as good.

My Delightful Two Cents:

Jagger, um yeah, Jagger. When I think about Jagger, pictures of this guy come to mind:

(Photo courtesy of Google Images, no copyright infringement intended)

And even though he’s much older now, (recently turned 42 years young), he still looks sexy as hell!

Any GH fan will tell you; this man had all sorts of swagger. His presence graced GH for a little over two years when he was in his early 20’s but he sure made one beautiful impression. Not only an actor but also a former Calvin Klein underwear model, I can’t help but picture Antonio Sabato, Jr. as Kim Karr’s Jagger. Can you blame me? A sizzling HOT model bod, slice of bad boy, dashed with a dose of charm and you have the perfect recipe for Jagger Kennedy, cousin of the infamous River Wilde, and star of Dazed, a Connections Series novella.
“He stands in front of me looking like sin on a stick. God, he’s beautiful.”
Kim sure knows how to write ‘em. The boys in her books are all sorts of ideal! Funny, beautiful, sexy, adventurous and downright chock full of the sugary sweetness any female would crave to lick.

I fell head over heels in love with Aerie and Jagger’s story. It was a pure delight; sinfully sexy and deliciously satisfying with just a smidgeon of angst, resulting in that pleasantly high sensation by the end. Perfect, really. (And let me just add that River and Dahlia are disgustingly cute. But that’s all I’ll mention about that adorable couple because this was really about Aerie and Jagger.)

I found myself smiling continuously for Aerie. My heart was full of happiness for her.  I adored her character in the first two Connections books and was thrilled that Kim wrote her own story. Aerie was a loyal friend who stood by Dahlia during her most difficult times. She seemed fierce, confident, ambitious and secure. Little did I realize Aerie had some deeply rooted issues that left her feeling much more vulnerable than she portrayed to the outside world. I understood those issues, I empathized with those issues. I felt her pain. Kim’s words have a way of seeping into your heart affecting one to develop a deep connection with her characters. Aerie’s vulnerability produced strong thick walls guarding her heart and soul. No one was able to break through, that is, until Jagger the cupcake thief smoothly entered her life.

Yes. Cupcake. Thief.

(Photo courtesy of Pinterest, no copyright infringement intended)

He stole her cupcakes…and her heart.

Jagger was a quiet force to be reckoned with. Smoldering, sexy, confident, charming…yet introspective. He was the Yin to Aerie’s Yang, if she would only let him penetrate those barriers guarding her heart. He brought to life a side of her buried deep within and begging to be set free. And Jagger was just the person to do it. Lucky girl, that Aerie.

Jagger had his own issues with heartbreak, but wasn’t the least bit afraid to pursue Aerie. He was determined to break through those walls and set Aerie free. But first he needed her to give up some of that perfectly ordered control she was so used to keeping. Predictability and routine were ingrained in Aerie’s lifestyle and she found it difficult to deviate. She didn’t realize the quiet inner strength she possessed until a conversation with a former acquaintance allowed her to unlock the key to her heart.

You’ll need to read this breathtaking story to uncover all the particulars as I don’t want to provide any spoilers. But rest assured, you will not be disappointed. If you’ve read Connections and Torn and love Kim Karr’s boys as much as I do, you will undoubtedly want to dive into Dazed! And if you haven’t yet read the Connections Series, may I respectfully ask, what are you waiting for? Next up…Mended!

Francine's Guest Review - Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover

I'm super excited to present to you my very first guest reviewer ever, as well as good friend, neighbor, and soon to be published author, Francine Richetti. We are both HUGE Colleen Hoover fans. Francine is the person who first recommended that I read Slammed, and well, any CoHo fan knows what happens after you read Slammed, you can't help but read every single book ever published by Colleen!

Title: Maybe Someday
Author: Colleen Hoover
Release Date: March 18, 2014

Francine's delightful two cents:

I start reading. I meet Ridge. I meet Sydney. I meet Warren (Who by the way I love.) I sense a love triangle from the get go. Okay, this is going to get messy. Cool. I like messy. I am cruisin, sippin on a diet Pepsi to channel my inner CoHo and BAM! Page 49. Well... I didn't see that little twist coming. But it was a non issue for them, so it was a non issue for me... until...
"Can you replenish your trust for 5 minutes? I want to hear your voice." I. Gasped. The first of many. Because their non-issue just became something breathtaking.

But then I laughed again. "GET... YOUR... SH*T... OUT... OF... THE...KITCHEN!" That was funny :)

This is so hard to write spoiler free. Ugh.

Then I meet Maggie. I want to hate her. But I can't, no matter how hard I try. Dang it CoHo!!! Why can't I hate her. Why do I wish she was my friend? Why do I want her to leave? Why do I want to hug her?

The relationships that Hoover creates are genuine. She invites you into the heads and hearts of Sydney and Ridge. Ridge's honesty if simply beautiful. And I just love Sydney, not because she is anything special, but because she is something incredibly special to him. And you want him to have her. I want him to have her, even though he shouldn't, or should I say... he won't. Because he won't do that to "her." Which makes you love Ridge even more. I actually hurt for him. And as much as I wanted to jump in this book and grab Warren to help me shake this boy, I knew he would never hurt her. And that made me sad. For all of them. Because none of them were living the life they were meant to live.

The conflict that she creates is heartbreaking. This was a beautiful story of loving, falling in love and knowing the difference. As soon as I heard the lyrics that Sydney wrote, I knew. I just don't know if they could ever be.

Dang it!!! Don't read past here if you don't want to read anything that may "Hint." Don't miss out on this gem. Absolutely fantastic read. would recommend it, and read it, over and over and over. But if you like to torture yourself... scroll down and read on!

I love Sydney and Ridge. I love them apart... which makes loving them together all the more.

Sometimes hearts beat in unison and sometimes they alternate... filling the gaps. You don't even know that something is even missing until one day... all the gaps are filled. And when those two hearts are together, it's like one continuous beat.

I love how they tried not to "Not like" each other by sharing flaws. I love that Ridge told her that "He can't hear his own farts." LMAO

I love how they communicated. I couldn't write that up top on this review because that would be a spoiler :) But I knew that the "Written" conversations were going to come back with a vengeance. But I love how Maggie could not find one word that would make what he did wrong.

I love how he loves her. He doesn't know it yet, he's too busy trying to figure out why seeing her with anyone else but him makes his heart hurt.
"And therein lies the problem, Sydney. You should be able to screw whoever you want to screw, and I shouldn't give a sh*t."
I love that she hurt for him. She didn't want him to be so torn. Because, she loved him too :)

I love that Warren doesn't like her.
I love that Warren warns her.
I love that Warren loves her.

I love Pine-sol.

I love the meaning of the Band Name Sounds of Cedar.

I love that he failed at trying not to fall in love. But she failed first.

I love that the first time she hears his voice he tells her, "I... will never... regret you." gasp. gaspity gasp gasp!!!

"She did forgive him." Did I mention I love Maggie?

I also love Brennan. "He can't hear what I'm saying right now, so I'll take this opportunity to tell you Ridge is full of sh*t."

I Loved, yes with a capital L.... Loved this story. Simply. Loved. It.

Thank you, Francine for that AWESOME review! I simply can't wait to read this book because I have not one single doubt that it will land at the top of my "favorite books ever" list.

As I'm sure most of you already know, Colleen Hoover worked closely (lucky lady) with Griffin Peterson of American Idol fame to provide us with some fabulous reading music. Two very talented people working together to bring us books and music together. What more could we possibly ask for!

Of course, I don't know them personally, but they both appear to be amazingly selfless people. This world could sure use some more Colleen's and Griffin's. I hope you will support their art by clicking on the links below.

Blog Blast, Excerpt, and Giveaway - Vice, Virtue, and Video by Bianca Giovanni

Title: Vice, Virtue, and Video: Revealed
Author: Bianca Giovanni
Release Date: January 13, 2014

James Laird and Lola Caraway have been next door neighbors and best friends since elementary school. James was always the ultimate player, and after graduation moves to LA and finds his place as a rising star in the porn industry. Lola, three years younger, is a studious overachiever and on track for graduation and success in college. Lola knows about and accepts James and his debauchery; it's never been a secret between the two friends. However, a hometown visit prompts James to face his evolving feelings for her, especially after his conservative family discovers his true profession and she comes to his rescue.

Not wanting to seduce the innocent Lola, he returns to California, where he sets his sights on becoming a superstar in the industry. While Lola is visiting James from college, they dance around their attraction to each other. After Lola admits she's never had an orgasm, James offers to be her hands-on teacher. A lifetime of friendship with a manwhore tells Lola that she should not get attached to James as a lover, as tempting as his offer may be. Can she please her body while still protecting her heart? From the author of some of the highest rated erotic romance on Smashwords comes this first look into a world of love, friendship...and porn.

“Okay,” she says sweetly, “Here are all the reasons you’re a wonderful person.”

I laugh, and I feel truly touched as she starts listing off all these things she likes about me. She covers everything from the way I always stand up for her when people are mean to her, to the fact that I’m better at driving in the snow than her, to how I make the best basil gnocchi she’s ever tasted. By the end of her pep talk, I feel like I could conquer the world.

“See?” She grins when she’s all done. “I told you you’re the best guy I know.”

I pause and look in her eyes. The pain is gone. All those awful feelings in the pit of my stomach from the way that my dad looked at me and the sound of my mom crying, have all kind of melted away. The relief of it is overwhelming, and I grab my chest as I try not to get emotional from this surge of happiness she’s just given me.

“Lo,” I say sincerely, “you’re the best person I know — in fact, I’m pretty sure you’re the best person who ever lived. You’re my angel, kid, and I want you to know that I love you and I appreciate every second that I get to spend with you — not just now, even back when we were little. I don’t think anybody’s ever cared about me as much or made me feel as happy as you do.”

“Aw!” She smiles and gives my chest a little reassuring pat. “It’s because I adore you, James. I truly, genuinely adore you, and anything I can do to make you happy makes me happy.”

I turn to her and caress the side of her face before I give her a sneaky peck on the lips.

“Down, boy!” She giggles and gives me a playful little smack on the shoulder.

“It was just a peck.” I laugh innocently.

“I’m not leaving this up to willpower,” she says, smiling a little flirtatiously, “because that’s a battle nobody’s gonna win.”

Blog Tour, Review, and Giveaway - Behind His Eyes Truth by Aleatha Romig

BEHIND HIS EYES TRUTH is the second of CONSEQUENCES SERIES three reading companions, by New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, Aleatha Romig. It is recommended to be read after completing all of the CONSEQUENCES SERIES: Consequences, Truth, and Convicted. It is not a standalone book and should not be read as such.

This reading companion explores the thoughts and motivations of Anthony Rawlings and his struggle to accept the truth behind the consequences. It is not intended as a total rewrite of TRUTH, but meant to enhance the reader’s understanding. BEHIND HIS EYES TRUTH contains significant scenes from the novel TRUTH, as experienced from Anthony’s point of view. It also contains never before read, behind the scenes information, a glossary of the characters, and a timeline which grows from Consequences to include the array of new characters and revelations found in the pages of Truth.

BEHIND HIS EYES TRUTH is the continued journey inside the mind of the man who supplied and survived the consequences. This companion allows readers the opportunity to witness first hand as Anthony’s world changes forever. His rules and control begin to slip away, threatened by the most unlikely foes—something completely unfamiliar.

Can something as pure as love and forgiveness wreak havoc on his well-planned existence?

BEHIND HIS EYES TRUTH, because there is more to learn about a man who:

Once upon a time, signed a napkin that he knew was a contract. As an esteemed businessman, he forgot one very important rule—he forgot to read the fine print. It wasn’t an acquisition to own another person as he’d previously assumed. It was an agreement to acquire a soul.
—Aleatha Romig, CONVICTED

Continue the long and painful acquisition, as the TRUTH becomes evident, from Behind His Eyes!

Glancing at the numerous pictures from his years of surveillance, Tony wondered if he and Claire had come full circle. Would it be like this again? Would his only connection to her be through this new investigator? Would he only see Claire in two dimensions? Tony searched for their contract, the beginning of their personal journey together. He knew it wouldn’t be that easy again. If he were to get her back to Iowa and into his life, it wouldn’t be because of a signature on a napkin.

Then he shook his head. He didn’t want her back, did he? Hell, the lack of sleep was making him sentimental. He stopped his search. The damn contract was no longer valid; it never had been—legally. Pushing the box back into its hideaway, he contemplated throwing it all away. Having her back wasn’t his goal; learning her location was. She had no right to disappear.

With the necklace in his hand, Tony settled upon the soft leather sofa in front of his fireplace. If Phillip Roach were correct, in a few moments he’d hear the voice that used to fill his suite and his house. When her voice came through his phone, Tony wanted to feel her presence. He imagined the sound as he looked up at her wedding portrait and saw the emerald green that haunted his dreams. What did he want to hear? He wanted to know she was safe and unharmed. He wanted to know where she was, and he also wanted to bring her back to Iowa—because that was where she belonged.

It didn’t make sense. To the world she was the woman who tried to kill him. To Tony she was more than that. The past twenty hours had proven it. She was his drug. Claire Nichols ran through his system like ecstasy, sending him on otherwise unobtainable highs. He reasoned that lows followed highs, and she’d given him those, too; they’d given them to each other. Nevertheless, without the right stimulant, the euphoria could never again be achieved. Whether it was elation or misery, neither would be obtainable without the exhilarating potency of Claire. He didn’t want an empty envelope. He wanted her. Nathaniel was wrong: Claire wasn’t gone; she was just misplaced.

For the last twenty-four hours, his entire being had surged with anticipation. Claire may not understand it—hell, Tony didn’t understand it, but he couldn’t deny it. Now that she was gone, he needed her back in his life, and he would have her.

My delightful two cents:

Behind His Eyes Truth is for fans of the bestselling Consequences series by Aleatha Romig. It is a companion novel and not meant to be read as a standalone book. If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to read this extraordinary series from the beginning, I highly recommend you do so. It’s a dark, twisted journey that will boggle your mind yet leave you craving more. Need more convincing? Read my review of Consequences here. Then read my review of Truth here. And my review of Behind His Eyes Consequences here.

Still not convinced? Peruse reviews of the entire series on Goodreads. If you enjoy dark, thrilling romances with surprising twists and turns, you will no doubt want to devour these books. Then you will undoubtedly want to read the latest in the series, Behind His Eyes Truth, which provides us an even further detailed glimpse into the perverse mind of a man once obsessed with seeking revenge on behalf of his deceased grandfather for past wrong doings.
“Nothing is so painful to the human mind as a great and sudden change.”
(Mary Shelley, Frankenstein)
Anthony Rawlings has had his world rocked. Turned upside down. Spun out of control. The very control that he is so used to maintaining with every fiber of his being. The cause of this earth shattering transformation?

Claire Nichols.
“Claire was the woman who spun his otherwise calm, predictable life out of control.”
What was once supposed to be an act of vengeance and nothing more than an acquisition, became an irrevocable and undeniable twist of fate.

Filling an envelope. Falling in love. Shedding tears. Apologizing. Anthony Rawlings doesn’t partake in any of these. At least he thinks he doesn’t.
“Anthony Rawlings had all the comforts money could buy, and he couldn’t remember being more miserable.”
This isn’t just simply a retelling of the book from an alternate point of view. Behind His Eyes Truth digs deep into Tony’s psyche giving us an intriguing look into his deepest and most private thoughts and feelings during significant portions of the story.  We observe Tony at his most vulnerable, a quality we rarely knew even existed before gaining entry into the mind of this egotistical, controlling, arrogant man.

We know we are supposed to hate him, so why do so many of us end up falling for him? I’m convinced that Aleatha’s eloquent writing style contains some sort of magical fairy dust. She has this unique ability to turn around a most hateful and shameful character and I not only forgave him but also fell even more in love with him. I struggled. I did struggle with our love/hate relationship. But the love ultimately won out. I couldn’t help myself. Must have been the magical fairy dust.

The banter between Tony and Claire…absofreakinglutely priceless. Tony most certainly met his match. After her release from prison, Claire was stronger, resilient, and fiercely independent. Or as Tony would say, “sexy, bold, and cheeky.” She took no crap. And Tony noticed.
“Times change; Claire’s action was challenge, one he gleefully accepted.”
“No, her spirit wasn’t broken. If anything, she was stronger than before.”
Aleatha is adept at causing us to experience the same overwhelming emotions of her characters, whether it be turmoil, stress, relief or love. She has successfully provided us with another emotional roller coaster ride in the Consequences series and never ceases to amaze me. And she certainly doesn’t disappoint. We all know that Tony does NOT like to be disappointed. After all, disappointment results in serious consequences.

In the words of another Aleatha fan (and I apologize for not remembering who coined this phrase), I’ve been Aleathaed, irrevocably and undeniably Aleathaed!

Have you been Aleathaed? If not, seriously, what are you waiting for?

He thought I owned him. He thought he loved me, that I was enough. But this animal, this sex god who could drive me crazy and steal my heart in the same breath, he would never be fully mine. It was impossible. No one ever owns a God.

7:45 a.m. The doomed walk of the dead through the lobby. I shielded my ring finger with my purse and smiled a brief hello to Ancient Dorothy, bee-lining for the elevators. I rode up alone, taking advantage of the silence to whisper a short prayer—apologizing for any recent sins and praying for compassion.

I was making coffee when the first person noticed the ring. It was hard to miss, sparkling brilliantly under overhead fluorescents, and Beverly, the wing’s secretary, pounced on it like a kitten going after catnip. “What is that?” She dropped her lunch box in the fridge and grabbed my hand with both of hers, oblivious to the dirty coffee filter I was holding, and I watched in irritation as used grounds flew everywhere, spotting the white tile with black specks. Her squat body was rooted to the ground, and she gripped my hand with a warrior’s intensity, her eyes fixated on the ring like it was a steaming hot funnel cake. I tried to gently tug my hand away, but it was like trying to pull Excalibur’s sword from the stone.

“I didn’t know you were dating anyone!” Beverly’s eyes left the stone and focused on me intently. “Did you get back together with your ex?”

“Errr ... No.” I smiled, though I think it came off more like a grimace. “This is someone new.”

“And you’re already engaged?” She tilted her head at me, puzzled, and I cursed the day I ever shared a moment of personal discussion with this woman, or any other creature on this floor.

“Yes. It is quite sudden.” I looked pointedly at the deflated coffee filter, and she released my hand with a quick, hurried movement.

“Oh my goodness, dear, I am sorry.”

I smiled and moved to the trash, dumping the filter and hoping she would leave.

“That is quite a ring. What does your fiancĂ© do?” She moved closer, officially entering my personal bubble.

Aw crap. “He’s an attorney.” I said offhand, washing my hands as noisily as possible, then started opening and closing cabinets, trying to put as many items and sounds between Beverly and me as possible. “I really can’t chat, Beverly. I’ve got to get this coffee on.”

“An attorney!” She beamed proudly. “Well, I know lots of attorneys. You know, I’ve been here thirteen years, and our cases involve firms from all over the city. He’s got to be a new attorney, maybe he interned here. What’s his name?”

I filled up the water reservoir, making a face and pointing to my ear, as if the pathetic pressure from the faucet was a gushing flow of Niagara proportions. That didn’t work. She waited patiently by the sink, and the minute I turned the faucet off, she spoke. “What’s his name?”

Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck. I was out of options. “I think you probably know him,” I said brightly, adding the water container to the coffee pot, and scooping out fresh grounds. “He works in the East Wing. His name is Brad.”

I really didn’t want to look at her, didn’t want to see whatever expression crossed her face, but my eyes were drawn to her without bidding, as if they had flipped my subconscious the bird and did exactly what they wanted to because ohmygodthiswasgoingtobetoogoodtomiss. She tilted her head, probably trying to think what peon in the East Wing was named Brad, because it couldn’t possibly be the Brad, and I watched with slow horror the moment her mind came up blank and rested on the only possible conclusion.

She stilled, her sturdy body freezing, and teetered a bit, sticking a hand out and grabbing the counter. Her face took on an odd expression, somewhere between smelling something sour and being constipated. It contorted for three long seconds, in which her mouth opened and closed twice, no words coming out. Finally, she swallowed hard and tried again.

“Brad De Luca?” Her voice still held a glimmer of hope, a possibility that she might be mistaken, that there was some new guy, some pencil-pushing nerd stuck in a small corner of divorce, who she hadn’t yet heard of. Some Brad Smith, or Taylor, or anything other than De Luca. I hated to squash that hope, almost felt a civil duty to lie. Almost.

I finished the damn coffee-making process and pushed START with an almost proud finality. Made it through that alive. Then, I turned back to Beverly. “Yes. Brad De Luca. Good, you do know him.” We did this weird country line dance shuffle where I tried to get around her, and she unintentionally kept getting in my way, and then I finally escaped, and was halfway out the door when I felt her iron grip on my arm. I turned, pasting a bright smile on my face. “Yes?”

I was yanked backward so hard I think one of my heels partially came off. Unsure, confused Beverly was gone, and in her place was a court marshal of Judge Judy proportions. She shut the kitchen door in a swift motion—I didn’t even know the kitchen had a door—and stuck both hands on her hips, squaring off to me. “You. Are Engaged. To Brad. De Luca.” She spoke slowly, drawing out the sentence excruciatingly, and seemed to physically grow bigger with every word.

“Yes.” I tried to maintain a cheerful disposition, but the air in the room was thick, and I was a little worried she might eat me for lunch instead of whatever was in her polka dotted lunchbox.
