Blog Tour, Review and Giveaway - Behind His Eyes - Consequences by Aleatha Romig

My Two Cents:

OOOO - Yes! Yes! Yes!

Behind His Eyes - Consequences is for fans of the bestselling Consequences series by Aleatha Romig. It is a companion novel and not meant to be read as a standalone book. If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to read this extraordinary series from the beginning, I highly recommend you do so. It’s a dark, twisted journey that will boggle your mind yet leave you craving more. Need more convincing? Read my review of Consequences here. Then read my review of Truth here. Still need even more convincing? Head on over to Goodreads and peruse the reviews for the entire series. If you enjoy dark, thrilling romances with surprising twists and turns, you will no doubt want to devour these books. Then and only then can you read the latest in the series, Behind His Eyes – Consequences, which provides us a glimpse into the perverse mind of a man obsessed with seeking revenge on behalf of his deceased grandfather for past wrong doings.
“Without fulfilling Nathaniel’s wish, Anthony Rawlings would
be incomplete.”

Although I couldn’t wait for the release of this book, I was truly frightened to take the leap into reading it. Being privy to Tony’s thought process was just as painful as I expected it to be even while knowing the series outcome. It stirred up all those old HATEFUL feelings prior to my being Team Tony and brought them barreling to the surface once again. I found it horrifying to face the cold hard facts. Tony was a cruel, calculating, controlling man who basically got off on his domination of Claire. Perhaps I was better off in denial.
“Even the slightest thought of his complete control over her life had an effect on his body.”
He controlled every single aspect of Claire’s life while treating her as a possession, an acquisition.
“It was about power. Everything about her existence was his to determine.”

Appearances were oh so important to Tony. Failure was NOT an option, especially public failure. Disappointing Tony resulted in punishment (sometimes rather severe) for poor sweet innocent Claire.

“When she disappointed him, she earned negative reinforcement.”
Once again, my heart shattered for her a million times over when she received unjust punishment. She certainly never deserved this treatment.
“Closing his eyes, he defined the woman next to him. She was his acquisition, his prisoner – a sacrificial lamb for the sins of her forefathers. She was his; he needn’t concern himself with worries over her emotional well-being.”
WHAT ABOUT MY EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING??? Grrrrrr…insert SCREAM here! He’s so DAMN frustrating. And downright MEAN! The emotional roller coaster ride seemed never ending! It was terrifying. Just when I began to think, well, maybe he really does have a heart, maybe he does really love her. Nope! More torment of Claire was on the horizon! Knowing the series conclusion was what helped me push ahead while being TORTURED by the darkness behind Tony’s eyes.

Once again, Aleatha’s writing is superb. She’s a master at taunting her readers and evoking intense emotional overload. This isn’t simply a re-telling of Consequences from Tony’s point of view. It is so much more than that. Significant chapters and events from Consequences are included and we are made aware of behind the scenes conversations that take place as well as Tony’s dark inner monologues. Although seriously disturbing, reading from his perspective was certainly insightful and revealing. Tony experienced certain emotions that he never before encountered and were entirely new to him. Of course, this was no excuse at all for most of his actions. And because of his distrust and constant need to test Claire, he brought on more pain not only to Claire but also to himself. I’m looking forward to gaining more perspective from Tony’s point of view as he slowly becomes self-aware and changes begin to take place. Bring it on, Aleatha! If I can read this, I can read anything!

The Beginning of the End...Coffee? - January 2012
(Consequences—Chapter 46)

When Tony crawled back into his bed, he slid behind Claire’s sleeping body and wrapped her in his arms. She fit perfectly as he was drawn to her radiating warmth. Gently kissing her hair, he tasted her perfume as his hands wandered her curves, caressing her soft skin. Her soft murmurs filled his heart with hope as she settled into his embrace. Smiling, Tony imagined that in a few days he’d have his wife on a sunny beach with nothing more than a bikini—maybe not even that. Those images and more filled his mind as he drifted off to sleep.

When he woke, Tony lingered longer than usual in the warmth of their bed. Being much too early for Claire to wake, he lifted his head, rested it on his elbow, and watched her sleep. Her lightened hair covered her pillow as renegade strands crisscrossed her exposed cheek. Along with her exposed face, one bare shoulder was visible above the mound of luxurious blankets. Tony leaned closer, kissed her forehead, and watched in amusement as her nose wrinkled. Lightly, he kissed her again. This time he was rewarded with the most beautiful moan as she stretched and turned toward him. Although Claire was still sound asleep, she subconsciously responded to his touch. He wanted to wake her, but he feared that if her warm soft skin touched his and they connected their bodies, as they’d been connected the night before, he wouldn’t be able to carry out his plan.

Brushing the strands of blonde from her face, he whispered, “You don’t need to wake, yet.” When she didn’t respond and he was confident of her sleeping, he added, “You have a big day, my dear. You need your rest. Tonight we’ll celebrate.”

Throughout Tony’s morning routine, he avoided thoughts of Claire’s impending examination. To him it was merely a formality—the final signature on their life long contract. The deal was already complete; she belonged to him—she wouldn’t disappoint.

She knew better; because, if she did, he’d promised consequences. And Anthony Rawlings was a man of his word.

Ask Aleatha:

1. What is something that we don’t know about your books?
I have made an effort to include all of my children’s and my niece and nephew’s names in my books. In most cases they aren’t the main characters. (I have no relatives named Claire or Anthony) However, beginning in Truth I slipped their names in as tertiary characters. In some cases I used a first name as a last name. BEHIND HIS EYES CONSEQUENCES contains a glossary of characters. That glossary will grow with each reading companion.
2. Tell us something that you think is fun about your books.
Well, besides using my family members’ names, I sometimes use whatever I see or hear. For example, I was watching The Big Bang Theory with my daughter as I was writing the original accident scene in CONSEQUENCES. That is why the attending doctor’s name is Dr. Leonard.  We were driving to Florida while I was writing some scenes in CONVICTED. I looked up and saw a billboard for Fairfield Resorts. That is how another character was named Dr. Fairfield. Honestly, that list could go on and on. So, I guess you could say it was a matter of convenience.

  2. Team Tony for sure.....! Oh wow....why? OMG how can I not say Tony? I love how he grew throughout the story.

    1. Yep! Same here! Although it was hard to remember why I was Team Tony when reading from his perspective!

  3. Even though I "disliked" Tony so much in these first two books "Consequences & Behind His Eyes", I still have to say that I do believe there was a good person deep down inside of Tony, so I was always behind him and on his side! He did make me so angry at times

    1. Ditto! Somewhere, way down deep, super deep, I just knew there had to be a heart!

  4. Team Tony! The truth is that I can explain the why. I am so confused from his character. He is not a good person for sure but there are moments which I like him and there are moments which I dislike him. But he has something...which I cannot explain.
Probably you don't understand what I am saying.
