EXCERPT: The Domino Effect

    “Richard Darling here.”
“Mr. Darling, this is Nancy Delaney. We met briefly at your opening the other night, when I was there to review the show?”
Stony silence. But at least he didn’t hang up.
“Um, I’m still working on that Art News Now review, but I’ve also been assigned a feature story on the artist for the Plain Dealer, I was wondering if I could ask you a few questions?”
“Go ahead.” His voice was like shaved ice, but at least he was willing to talk. I decided a simple, direct approach was best.
“How long have you known Peter Rostovich?”
    “Over twenty years.”
“When did you two first meet?”
“We lived in the same neighborhood back in New York as teenagers. Brighton Beach. I lived there with my grandparents. Peter moved there with his mother shortly after he came to the States from Sevastopol. I was from the old German Jewish community there, Peter was from the new wave of Russian Jews who came during the early 90s in droves.”
    “Rostovich is Ukrainian.”
    “Russian, Ukrainian, same difference.”
Not if you ask Peter, I thought, but figured that wouldn’t add anything to the conversation. “So you hung out as teens, then. What originally drew you to one another?”
“We were both interested in art,” Darling replied. His tone softened and he seemed to relax a bit. “Peter liked to draw and take pictures with an old Polaroid camera. I was more of a connoisseur. I was a student at Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan and wrote an arts column for the paper. Peter was a dropout who basically spent all his time wandering around the city drawing and taking pictures, and engaging in his side businesses. I met him hanging around the neighborhood and then profiled him for a story I wrote on New York teens who were leading unconventional lives. We just sort of hit it off from there.”
“So you’ve stayed in touch for all of these years, then? Tell me a bit about that.”
“We stayed in touch off and on. Not always, but we managed to connect at least once a year. Peter’s work took him off to a lot of exotic places, and sometimes he just likes to disappear and be unconnected. Though he has a large circle of acquaintances, he doesn’t have many close friends. He’s a loner. It’s part of his personality, and also a big part of his creative process.”
“Would you consider yourself one of Peter’s close friends, then?”
A pause. “I did once. I’m not sure I do anymore.”
    “Why?”
Another pause, longer this time. “Because I no longer feel that I can trust him.”
    “Go on.”
He heaved a sigh that blew static across the phone lines. “Once upon a time, Peter Rostovich was one of the very few truly authentic people I ever met,” Darling said, which surprised me.     “Even back when we were kids, he lived life entirely on his own terms, and refused to let anyone else dictate what decisions he made or what path he chose. He was true to himself, always. And because of that, I knew I could rely on his honesty. He wasn’t forthcoming like most people I knew, he held a lot back---but what he did give you was always solid gold genuine. I respected that. Still do. But I don’t respect what happened at my gallery last week. Not at all.”
“Would you say the, ahem, incident was out of character for Rostovich then?”
“Yes. Completely out of character. Peter never loses control of anything. Everything he does has a distinct purpose. That’s why I don’t believe him when he says those two models did what they did entirely on their own.”
“I see. So you really believe that the, ahem, public sex act was planned?”
    “I do.”
So now we were getting somewhere. This was plenty juicy, and in more ways than one---assuming I could actually print it in a family newspaper publication. “And what makes you think that? Besides Rostovich’s past history of honesty, I mean.”
“Because it’s classic Peter. He’s always been about pulling stunts, ever since we were kids. This was just another stunt, he did it for attention. Only it brought attention to the wrong person. Namely, me.”

Blog Tour, Review & Giveaway - Consquences by the Amazing Aleatha Romig

To say that I have been impatiently waiting for this blog tour is a huge understatement. I am super excited to share with you today Aleatha Romig's Consequences! This is most definitely one of my top favorite reads of 2013! I've been shouting from the rooftops the sheer genius of Aleatha since finishing this book. I only wish I had saved all the texts between myself and a friend after talking her into reading it so I could share them here. Here's a little sample of what I do remember. They went something like this:

Her: WTF???
Me: Keep reading.
Her:  What are you making me read? What is wrong with this man?
Me: Keep reading! It's going to get much worse before it gets better.
Her: Seriously, did he just do that? He's a (insert string of profanity).
Me: Just keep reading.
Her: I HATE Tony! He is seriously disturbed.
Me: Keep on reading!
Her: OMG! Really? Really?
And so on, and so on, and so on! I'm sure you get the picture. So, keep on reading to find out more about this compelling story!

Title: Consequences
Author: Aleatha Romig
Tour Organizer: Hardcover Therapy

Book Synopsis:

Besieged by memories of a brutal abduction, Claire Nichols wakes in an unfamiliar bedroom, within a luxurious mansion. Her recollections have one common denominator, the man she just met, Anthony Rawlings.

Unbeknownst to Claire, for a very long time, she has been within Anthony’s sights. Many of the pivotal events in her life occurred, due to his sinister manipulation. Every action has a consequence, and his actions result in their chance meeting.

More than a psychological thriller, Consequences is a vivid story of one woman’s struggle to survive incomprehensible circumstances. Every aspect of her being suddenly depends upon the tall, wealthy, dark haired, dark eyed businessman. Anthony Rawlings is known to the world as prosperous, benevolent, and kind. Claire quickly learns that he can also be a menacing controlling captor.

With few options but concession, Claire attempts to earn her freedom, while enduring a hellish existence that truly appears perfect. Persevering tests and trials, she struggles to retain her pure Midwest values and beliefs. Encouraged by memories of a loving upbringing, she gains strength in the simplest of joys: solitude in nature and good in the face of evil.

His goal in sight, Anthony’s calculated agenda encounters an unforeseen detour. He becomes captivated by Claire’s beauty, resilience, and determination. The interaction of these two compelling characters instigates strong emotions: fear, anger, love, and lust. Claire and Anthony’s tumultuous journey flows into uncharted waters of intrigue and passion.

Utilizing vivid detail, this 167,000-word novel unfolds like a movie, before the eyes of its readers. From the opening criminal abduction, through twists and turns, to the unlikely romantic thrills, the suspense climaxes as Anthony’s motivation becomes evident.

Anthony and Claire must decide if they will stay true to one another, or allow preceding actions to result in justifiable Consequences.

Consequences Teaser:

While still in the bathroom, her heart rate increased as she heard the faint beep again. He didn’t knock. He just opened the door and entered. Claire imagined him surveying the empty suite. If she stayed in the bathroom, would he eventually come for her? Or leave? He waited silently in the bedroom. It took a minute or two. But slowly, Claire opened the bathroom door and entered the suite.

She used all her strength to suppress the fears that screamed to get out, determined to meet him head-on at his mind game. The first things she saw as she entered the suite were his eyes, his dark black eyes, resembling voids or black holes. His lips were moving. He was talking, yet Claire could only hear the memories of the previous night. She walked to the bookcase at the far end of the suite, feigning strength.

The fake resolve melted as she turned to see the eyes staring directly at her. Then almost instantaneously, he was there, right in front of her. His proximity caused her stomach to wrench, bringing back the nasty bile from earlier.

He grabbed her chin, pulling her eyes and face toward the dark voids. His strong voice was deep, slow, and authoritative. “Shall we try this once more.” It wasn’t a question but a statement. “It is customary for one person to respond to the greeting of another. I said good evening.”

Claire’s knees went weak at his touch. She wanted to yell, to run, but she couldn’t let herself. If she couldn’t be strong, she could at least avoid fainting. “I’m sorry. I don’t believe I am feeling well.” With his grip still upon her chin, she knew he could feel her body tremble.

He repeated, “Good evening, Claire.” This time, it was more drawn-out. His eyes were so cold. Claire couldn’t distinguish what they said, only see the depth of their infinite darkness.

“Good evening, Anthony.”

My View:

OOOOO+-Yes, Yes, Yes!!!!!

Do you ever wonder what drives people to do the things they do? Say the things they say? Behave the way they behave?  According to Anthony Rawlings, BEWARE! Every action has a Consequence. And, things aren’t always what they seem.  So begins our journey into Consequences, the dark, fascinating, psychological, sometimes romantic, most times not, thriller by the amazing Aleatha Romig.

First off, let me state simply that Aleatha Romig is a BRILLIANT, TALENTED writer. Written in third person, much of this book was in narrative form focusing on Claire’s inner monologues. Ms. Romig’s simplistic yet eloquent writing style reminded me of Sylvain Reynard’s Gabriel series.  For me, it contained just the right amount of description and didn’t succumb to wordiness, overwriting, or overuse of adjectives which almost always slows down a story for me.

The plot of this book is so deliciously disturbing. Yes, deliciously disturbing. Oxymoron, I know. It is a dark, angsty, fascinating, intriguing, riveting, distressing, heart-wrenching ride that evoked a plethora of emotions. (What was that I just said about overuse of adjectives? Sorry, couldn’t help myself!) I was confused, angry, horrified, happy, sad, worried, anxious, you name it! For me, there is nothing better than a book making me intensely FEEL every. single. emotion. of the characters as if I was experiencing their situations myself.

Don’t assume you know what’s going on. It’s confusing. Aleatha eases us into the storyline. But believe me, this book had me teetering on the edge right along with Claire from page one.  Just when I thought I knew what was happening…NO! Did that just happen? OMG! The twists and turns were easily overwhelming and exasperating.

Some chapters didn’t make sense, yet I knew they would do so eventually. I had faith that it would all be tied together and sure enough, it was, in one big super twisted knot. I finally figured it out when I was at the 76% point. While I had inklings here and there about what was going on, why Tony was doing what he was doing, I was constantly second guessing myself, I really didn’t know for sure and believe it or not, I liked it that way. It kept me on my toes, I enjoyed that it wasn’t clear cut. Even though I was guessing and trying to formulate my own theories, I didn’t know for certain if I was on the right path.

When having the pleasure of meeting Aleatha Romig after the Boston Author event she mentioned having a fondness for being able to evoke real emotions in her readers. Well, congratulations, Aleatha! You certainly achieved your goal with Consequences. It was a high impact, emotional roller coaster ride with a few loop-de-loops thrown in for good measure. I loved Claire. I hated Tony.  I was distressed. I was frightened. I was teary-eyed. I wanted to kick Tony in his you-know-what! I wanted to scream, yell and cry! I wanted to hug Claire. At times, I was proud of Claire. At other times, I wanted to throttle her. I didn’t trust Tony. But then I wanted to. And I was so darn torn. Torn to absolute shreds! And then, I hated Tony some more! You see where I’m going with this? The plot was so intense, I found myself holding my breath without even realizing it, especially during those last few chapters. And oh, that Afterward! Absolutely BRILLIANT! I was one big mess following that Afterward! One big huge sniveling MESS! This entire story ripped me to shreds.

So many questions that still needed to be answered. Consequences  left me wanting more, much more! I am anxiously looking forward to finding out the Truth! Yeah, I started reading that immediately! No delayed gratification for me. I jumped right into that one. Stay tuned. The Truth blog tour will be coming your way soon.

Is it a personal attack against her irreverent and somewhat unconventional teaching style?

About the Author:

Nina Lewis wrote her first story when she was nine years old, a drama of love and jealousy set in a circus. Her best friend and she performed it to themselves over and over again, for ever changing the dialogue, conflicts and endings. It strikes her as ironically appropriate that her first published novel is set on a college campus – the habitat of many a strange, loveable or fierce creature. When she isn’t busy training animals to jump through the hoops of college education, Nina is knee-deep in her second novel, which is set in England during the French Revolution – historical romance being her favourite genre of fiction.

Casting: Who would be your picks?

I have two dream couples in mind here: It would either be Rachel Weisz and Ralph Fiennes, like this: http://www.imdb.com/media/rm2404686080/tt0387131, or Lisa Edelstein (Dr. Cuddy) and Hugh Laurie (Dr. House), like this: http://img.tvmag.lefigaro.fr/ImCon/Arti/57323/diapo/4993/Dr-House-1p.jpg

Yeah. Either would be fine.

Excerpt: Giles and Anna meet for the first time

“Giles, I’ve brought our new assistant professor to meet you. Anna Lieberman.”

 “Professor Cleveland…”

In a split second I debate with myself whether to extend my hand or not, and decide on a gut feeling that I will not. Reserve seems a better strategy here than familiarity. He sits at his desk—not a particularly tidy desk—and looks reluctant even to rise from his chair, let alone to shake my hand. Eventually he does get up, and my heart beats faster, nervousness becoming tinged with alarm. Tall I knew him to be, but up close his six foot something tower above my five foot four like Gandalf over a Hobbit. A Celt, with light eyes and dark hair gone prematurely gray. There is nothing remarkable about his appearance, except that a tall man, halfway between gangly and gaunt, will always look good in light brown cotton pants and a blue shirt, open at the neck and rolled up at the sleeves. Next to him I look like a complete klutz. I am furious that I have allowed Elizabeth Mayfield to put me at such a disadvantage.

I nerve myself to smile up into his face. His features are lean and regular but not wildly handsome, and there is nothing charming about him at all when he looks down at me—on me, too—with that particularly English brand of polite dislike and says,

“Dr. Lieberman. How do you do. I was…told of your appointment.”

The sound of that well-educated, faintly nasal English voice hits me in the middle of my body and contracts the muscles of my womb in a spasm of response.

I feel a spate of explanations and justifications rushing to my tongue. I want him to know that although I have been foisted on him I am sure that we will get along well, that I will do my best to honor the confidence the college has shown in me. But I say none of these things. Could not, because my tongue is in knots; and do not want to, either, suddenly, because he is so pompous and unwelcoming to a junior colleague who really cannot help the situation at all.

“How do you do, sir.”

He blinks, as if taken aback. “I assume you’ve been well looked after?”

“Yes, sir, thank you.”

“Right. Well, then…” Get the hell outta here, bitch. He does not say it out loud, but I can see the words forming behind his forehead. Evidently Cleveland hasn’t been told yet that he is to play Mother Goose to this gosling.

“Can you spare a few minutes, Giles? The least we can do is make sure Anna has a smooth start, and I was hoping you’d show her the ropes.”

There is an edge in Elizabeth’s voice now, a note of admonishment, and he hears it and, to my surprise, heeds it. He comes down from his high horse and suddenly looks very much younger. At a loss, almost vulnerable, with his soft gray hair curling in wisps behind his ears, and his broad, lean, boyish shoulders. The man is a chameleon.

“By all means. Dr. Lieberman, won’t you sit down?” It is all I can do not to clutch Elizabeth’s skirt to beg her not to leave me alone with him, but she closes the door behind herself and we are alone. In very non-companionable silence. He points toward the sofa, which has clearly been chosen to make people feel small. Its seat is very deep, so I can either perch on the edge, looking nervous, or sit back, in which case my feet will hardly touch the floor and I will look like a five-year-old. I choose a mid-position, put my bunch of keys on the low table in front of me and hope Cleveland will not see my hairy little Hobbit-feet.

He stands over me, reluctant, a very remote fortress. Isengard.

Who knew being with Mr. Wrong could be so right?

Caitlyn Hart is shooting her first movie, and she doesn't want to screw it up. Still, she's on a deadline and when her co-star, Mr. Hot Shot Campbell, holds filming up, he's immediately on her shit list. But she can't ignore his charms for long or the overpowering want she feels for him. Even though she knows he's her Mr. Wrong, she doesn't mind him being her Mr. Right Now. If only her silly heart would stay immune.

Having been burned once, Jake Campbell doesn't have the capacity to love, but that doesn't mean relationships of a purely sexual nature are off limits. After all, a man has needs. His sexy co-star with fire red hair and a passion to match ignites his own desire and he sets out to convince her a fling is the only way to scratch the proverbial itch. Little did he figure that she'd be the one to penetrate the thick scars on his heart and make him feel.

About me (snooze—can you tell I hate the me stuff? Lol)

For as long as I can remember, I've had a good book in my hands. In primary school I loved Roald Dahl. In high school my English teacher introduced me to Charles Dickens, Stephen King, Jane Austin, Emily Bronte, and Shakespeare. It was then that I discovered my love for romance and I've wanted to pen my own imaginary heroes and heroines for others to enjoy ever since. Only in the last few years was I lucky enough to meet some fabulous and encouraging people to help me gain the skills to make that dream possible.

I live in sunny Scotland in a small town near the Ochils and work nine to five in a solicitors office. In my free time, you'll find me on Facebook, stalking *cough* following friends on Twitter, and may even catch me shoe shopping.

Blog Tour - Blessed Fate by H.B. Heinzer

Colton Bradford never believed in love at first sight. And then, Rain Maxwell walked through his buddy's front door. He knew there was something special underneath the shy, guarded exterior and was determined to find out what it was.

The problem? Rain had devised her own set of life rules and “Never get involved with a band mate” was right near the top of that list. She allowed Colton into her heart as one of her closest friends, but pushed him away at the mention of anything more.

When tragedy strikes Rain's personal life, Colton is determined to be there for her in whatever way she'll allow. Will she finally open up to him and consider taking things to the next level? Will Colton's ways of trying to bury his feelings for Rain in the past ruin the possibility of a future for them?

Review to come soon! I loved Blessed Tragedy. I'm loving Blessed Fate even more! Being inside Colton's head, PRICELESS! Thank you H.B. for giving us Colton's side of the story! Dreamy sigh...

About the author:

Some writers can tell you what book piqued their interest in writing a book of their own. I can’t. Other authors tell you the name of a teacher who influenced and encouraged them to write. The only English teacher I can remember probably does deserve some of the credit for my success because she was one of the hardest teachers I ever had. Honestly, I don’t know why I write; all I know is it’s one of two things I can do that makes me feel completely free.

The first “official” writing I did was as a fifteen year old high school sophomore. My dad was part of an APAzine and, for whatever reason, I started guest writing on his zine. That led to me getting a zine of my own in the Turbo Charged Party Animal APA. Rope the Moon (named after the John Michael Montgomery song and a nod to my dad’s influence on me) was the ramblings of a child in a world of adults.

I was held to a high standard because most of the contributors were my dad’s age. They were somewhat hesitant to allow a kid in, but they voted me in after those guest contributions. To this day, I feel blessed to consider some of those members friends.

Sometime after high school, life got in the way of my dreams. They keyboard was dusty. Looking back, that’s also when I felt my most restless. After my daughter was born, I started my first blog, More Than Mom, as a way to vent about my struggle to hold onto the identity I’d owned for 27 years.

In 2006, I heard about NaNoWriMo for the first time. I jumped in with the enthusiasm of anyone who’s never tried to write a 50,000 word novel in a month. It was a damn good story. Did I mention I’d never written anything of that length before? Yeah, that’s important because it means I never lost a work in progress of that length before. It was November 14th and I was over 24,000 words when my hard drive failed. And with the loss of my manuscript, I lost the drive to write for a while.

In 2012, I attempted NaNoWriMo again, this time saving in so many places I’m sure I’ll be finding partial copies of Bent everywhere until the day I die. The thing they don’t tell you with NaNo? When you hit 50,000 words, that doesn’t mean you’re done writing! So, I kept writing until I was done. And then I edited. And edited some more. Deleted a bunch of scenes, added others in. Had some trusted friends and mentors read it and then tweaked it some more.

In January 2013, I made the single scariest click of my mouse that I will ever make. I published Bent. It’s been a whirlwind year and it keeps picking up pace but I’ve never before felt so blessed to be where I am!

I’d love to hear from you! Feel free to email me at hbheinzer@gmail.com with questions, comments or even a good joke!

Book Description:

Life doesn't look like it's supposed to for Daniela, aka Dani. After a painful break-up with Rick, Dani decides she doesn't want to deal with the hassles of relationship.

After almost two years, Dani's friends stage an intervention, forcing her out of her holding pattern and back into the real world of dating.

Liam, a down to earth firefighter, may be just the person to show her she’s still worth something. Their chemistry is instant and electric. But will Dani be able to trust her patched-up heart with him?

And what will happen when Rick decides he’ll go to any lengths to get her back?

Excerpt:

She grabbed the remote and quickly turned on Christmas mood music. It was nice but unnecessary. I was already in the mood. I wrapped my arm around her waist and dragged her back into me. She fell into my chest, giggling, as she tossed her head to the side.

I was like one of those vampires, zeroing in on my source of life. I licked, sucked, and nipped her neck. She whimpered, and her body trembled. My pants were about to tear apart like the Incredible Hulk.

She turned around, hooking her hand on my neck.

I cradled her in my arms. “I love you, baby.” I leaned my forehead against hers. “We’re going to open gifts later, right?”

She drove me insane. It wasn’t the way Mr. Hurst had explained it in sixth-grade health class. Well, it was, but it was more than that. My dick and heart collided, and my desire for her had become more than just a physical ache and throb. When I would look into her eyes, she had reached in and grab hold of me. I would crave her lips like someone would need a tall glass of water in the desert. But the most out-of-this-world amazing moment would be when I was inside of her. We literally would become one. I didn’t know that I wasn’t a whole person until I was with her.

Chapter Seven
Claire

“Did Eddie call you again?” She nods and the anger I felt when Senia’s cheating ex-boyfriend called her last week returns. “You don’t need to be with an asshole. You are beautiful and smart—”

“And I give a mean bj.”

“Exactly. You don’t need a guy who’ll fuck anything with legs. You deserve a guy who’ll worship you.”

“So you think Tristan’s just looking for a fuck?”

I don’t even answer because this question is ridiculous.

“Do you think Chris gave him my number? How did he get my number?”

“I don’t know, but if it was Chris, I’m going to have a talk with him about that.”

“No, don’t get mad at him. I’ll take care of Tristan. I’ll text him a picture of my bunion. He’ll never text me again.”

I try not to laugh because, sadly, I know Tristan is too persistent to be deterred by a bunion pic. I stand from the bed and make my way to the dresser where she has a picture of the two of us framed in a pink “Best Friends Forever” picture frame. It’s a picture taken last Thanksgiving when her uncle took us to his house in Carolina Beach. I was four months pregnant, so I wore a big T-shirt to hide my bulge and hardly spoke to anyone the whole weekend, afraid they’d hear the betrayal in my voice.

“I’m going to see Abigail on Monday,” I say as I pretend to be interested in the other framed pictures on her dresser.

“What? How did this happen? Oh, my god, Claire! Are you sure this is what you want?” She leaps off the bed and rushes to my side.

I pause a moment before I look up into her eyes and respond firmly. “I need to see her, even if it’s just this once. I don’t know if I can even explain to you the ache I feel inside. It’s excruciating and it consumes me, day and night. I just want to see her.”

“You don’t think it might make it worse?”

“I don’t know, but this is not the kind of thing I want to play it safe with. This is my daughter. I’ve never seen her and I already feel like I might die without her. I just need to see her, at least once. I need to know that she’s real. I need to see this beautiful person that Chris and I created.” I pause to wipe the tears from my face. “I don’t know if you can understand that, but that’s how I feel. It’s what I need.”

She stares at me for a moment and her big brown eyes shine as if she’s hatching a devious plan inside her twisted mind. “Claire, I’ve known you long enough to know that you wouldn’t do this unless it was what’s right for you. You have some kind of weird radar for that shit. I also think that I may have misjudged Chris.”

“Are you being serious?”

“Yes, I was pissed about the fact that he never got in touch with you all those months you were living here, but I think I just realized something and I’m sorry I didn’t realize it sooner.” She pauses as she takes a breath and steels herself to speak whatever words she’s about to say. “I think you needed Adam to show you how much you still love Chris.”

That is not at all what I expected her to say and I’m actually a little pissed. “I don’t think so.”

“I’m sorry. I don’t mean to say that Adam was a stepping-stone.”

“No, I don’t want to hear that. Can we just go downstairs?”

She nods and hangs her head apologetically, but I’m still upset with her. I clench my jaw to keep from uttering an angry retort. Adam was not a stepping-stone.

Blog Tour - Schooled Two by Deena Bright

The Final Lesson Plan
SMUTLESS
Schooled Two

“They’re baaack!”

The raunchy, witty gang from Schooled is back again, but this time what they lack in full-out graphic erotica, they more than make up for in humor, sarcasm, sexual innuendo, and believe it or not, emotional angst.

Now that Janelle Garrity’s reputation has been slandered all over her hometown, and the locals are referring to her as “Professor Pedophile,” she has a lot of cleansing of her good name to tend to. But that won’t stop her from still getting down and dirty with her sexy boy toys, Briggs Alexander and Leo Cling. Both men taught her about that four-letter word, lust. But, can they further her education and teach her even more about that other four letter word, love? Briggs and Leo both possess secrets that Janelle never saw coming. Will those secrets be too much for her, causing this teacher to dismiss class early? Or does Janelle Garrity, teacher extraordinaire, have that special ability to turn all situations into a “teachable moment” for everyone involved?

Inquiring and dirty minds want to know; will Janelle hold on to that hunky football star, taking him all the way to the end zone? Or will Janelle choose the romance-reading intellectual as her other half? The Final Lesson Plan will give you all the answers, and you won’t even have to cheat.

Excerpt:

When I heard the knock, my skin tingled; I’d waited long enough. I opened the door and Briggs was on me in a second.  His mouth hungrily sought mine, devouring me.  I had no desire to hold back, no feeling of restraint.  I wanted him, needed him.  I wrapped my arms around his neck and he lifted me up.  My legs wrapped eagerly around his waist; I could feel his erection straining against his shorts. I loved that he was hard on arrival.  (HOA—way better than DOA) That was hot.  Too hot.  Wow.

“Fuck, I missed you,” he groaned into my mouth.  “Goddamn.”  Our breathing and desire increased; all the worry and frustration of the last few days were gone.  All that mattered was that he was here with me, ready. And oh so freaking hot.

Briggs nearly threw me on the couch; the look in his icy blue eyes made me squirm. I wanted him; there was no denying that. After our lessons last month, I knew what he had to offer, and it was an offer worth taking.  He took off his shirt and started walking toward me, never taking his eyes from mine.

“Jesus Christ,” Leo said through gritted teeth. “I can’t be three minutes late, for fuck’s sake?” Leo picked up Briggs’ shirt, handed it to him, patted his stomach, and said, “Looking a little soft, McConaughey, might wanna lay off the junk food.”   The shirtless McConaughey reference made me explode with laughter, only pissing off Briggs more.

Briggs snagged his shirt back and put it on, “Fuck off Cling, soft my ass.”

“Janelle, really?” Leo walked over to the couch and sat down on the coffee table. “I don’t expect much from that barbarian, but really?  Do you have no restraint?”

“Don’t ‘Janelle really’ me,” I argued.  “Neither of you have touched me in ten very long days.”

Man, Leo looked good.  He must’ve taken his mom and grandma to brunch earlier; something he does on the first Sunday of every month.  He knew I was a sucker for the preppy, frat boy look.  His clothes were his ammunition today.  I loved a well-dressed man. His tan polo shirt looked incredible with this sun-kissed skin. I was surprised at how tan he looked, knowing that he probably doused himself in a gallon of sunscreen every time he encountered daylight.   And Briggs, he knew that his eyes were my weakness; he’d deliberately worn a light blue shirt to accentuate my kryptonite. I just knew it.  These two were playing hardball.  Damn.

Leo grabbed my hand and said, “Trust me, these last ten days have been torture, but I promise, I’ll make every last minute up to you tomorrow.” He kissed my hand; my breath caught.  I licked my lips.  He sighed, leaning closer to me, and I sat up, meeting him.

“What the fuck,” Briggs said.  “This shit ain’t gonna work.  I’m gonna flatten Loverboy Leo over here,” he threatened, pushing Leo back.  Leo stood up, squaring off, staring Briggs right in his gorgeous, panty-creaming eyes.  They were eye-to-eye, like two animals fighting over their prey. Me. I still couldn’t fathom that Leo Cling was as tall and as cut as Briggs Alexander.  It was truly amazing.  Amazing to see the eighth and ninth wonders of the world standing in my pool house, both wanting me.

I walked between them when Leo whined like schoolboy, “Seriously Janelle, he said ‘ain’t,’ isn’t that some sort of deal-breaker for you?”

“Awwww whattsa matter Cling, don’t think you’re man enough to win this?” Briggs goaded him.

Excerpt: Chapter 30 – Claire’s POV

We arrive at Angie’s Restaurant just before ten and, to my surprise and horror, the waitress who seats us in our booth recognizes us.

“Chris,” she says, poking Chris’s arm before she turns to me. “And Claire.”

I don’t recognize her and judging by the puzzled look on Chris’s face he doesn’t recognize her either. Her cheeks are hollow and her brown hair hangs all the way down to her butt in a long ponytail. Nothing about her is familiar to me, but Chris quickly recovers his wits—or his memory—and gives her his crowd smile. Ugh. I have a love/hate relationship with his crowd smile.

“Priscilla,” he says, and her gray eyes light up. “Can you believe how long it’s been?”

She hands me my menu without taking her eyes off Chris. “Where the heck have you been? Oh, wait. I know where you’ve been. You’re a friggin’ rock star now! But you look exactly the same! Except that leg. What the heck happened there?”

Chris goes into a brief explanation of the motorcycle accident, carefully leaving out the fact that he was out riding his bike that day to try to forget how upset he was over Abigail and me. She asks if she can sign his cast before she finally takes our order. He orders the usual Denver omelet then turns to me. “Do you want the usual?”

I don’t know if he really remembers what I used to get, so I decide to test him. “Sure.”

He turns to Priscilla and she waits with a curious expression as he thinks for a moment. “Belgian waffle with bacon and eggs over-medium.”

Priscilla shakes her head as she jots it down. “Too cute.”

Once Priscilla is gone, I glare at him across the table. “Do you always have to show off?”

“I’m a performer. What do you expect?”

“A little humility.”

“Hey, I’m humble. I don’t go around bare-chested, wearing fucking leather pants with my shirt hanging out my back pocket.”

“Because you know I’d make fun of you if you did that.”

“No. I only do it on Wednesdays.”

Hump day.

I ignore the jealous roar inside me as I imagine how many girls have been on this end of his charming little act.

“Are you okay?” he asks as Priscilla shows up with our coffee. He flashes her a tight smile and she quickly sets off.

“I’m fine.” Just getting a glimpse of what life with you would be like now that you’re God.

“You don’t look fine. I know what you need.”

I need to not be here. I should be in my dorm moping like I have been the last few Sundays since Adam broke up with me. Instead, I’m sitting across the table from the one person, other than myself, who I can actually hold responsible for breaking us up. What is wrong with me?

“Chris, no offense, but I’m beginning to think that even I don’t know what I need.”

His smile fades and he stares at my hands for a while before he reaches across the table and grabs my left hand. He rubs his thumb over my knuckles for a moment before he brings my hand to his lips and lays a soft kiss on my ring finger.

“I know what you need.” He keeps rubbing my ring finger between his thumb and forefinger and it’s making me nervous. “It’s the same thing you’ve always needed since the day we met. You need your home.”

I swallow hard as I try not to let him see how relieved I am that he didn’t do something crazy like proposing to me in Angie’s Restaurant. A year ago, I would have loved for Chris to propose to me over a casual breakfast. I was deep in the throes of self-pity over the breakup and I wanted nothing more than for him to walk through my door and tell me he couldn’t live another day without me. Now, the thought of Chris proposing to me actually fills me with panic.

“I have a home. I live with Senia.”

“Yeah, but how about the holidays and the summer. You’re coming home, aren’t you?”

I pull my hand out of his and he narrows his eyes at me. “I promised your mom I would be there for Christmas. I’m not going to break my promise.” He shakes his head then stares out the window. “Why are you shaking your head? You can’t expect me to commit to spending every holiday at home. You’re really putting me on the spot here.”

He sighs before he turns back to me and looks me in the eye. “You want everything Claire. And to me you are everything. Do you have any fucking idea what that feels like?”

“Are you trying to make me feel guilty for being confused?”

“Did you not hear what I just said? This is it for me. I may have possibly blown my record deal and even my career to be here with you. I know you didn’t ask me to do it and I’m not asking you to drop everything for me, but can you at least pretend to care?”

“I do care. I—”

Priscilla arrives with our plates of food, one of her eyebrows raised, as she is keenly aware she has interrupted a heated discussion. She sets our plates down and leaves without asking if we need anything else.

We eat in silence, though both of us seem to have lost our appetites. When we make it back to my car, he grabs my hand before I can turn the key in the ignition. I close my eyes as I wait for him to speak.

“Can you look at me?” I open my eyes and turn to him as he releases my hand. “I need to tell you something I probably should have told you a few weeks ago.”
